My 2003 EX accord (4 cyl) purchased from my brother in law for $500 has been a great car. She came to us at a time when I needed a car and a job, and I was beyond ecstatic to have something I could use to find work.
Flash forward 3 years and 50k miles later. Our family is in a different place. we went from owning 2 cars and 2 motorcycles to 5 cars and 1 motorcycle. With 1 kid graduating and moving away, my thoughts turn to which car to let her take with her. Yes the Subaru is registered to her, but it's an 18 year old rust bucket that might not be reliable enough for her to live far away and be worry free for the next 2 years.
Another kid is moving away to begin college in the northeast and doesn't need a car for her first year.
Kid #1 needs a reliable car to get her to work,
Kid #2 won't need a car for another year.
The accord currently has no heat on the driver's side so it's not comfortable to drive it on the coldest days of winter and now the AC has become intermittent so it can't be driven comfortably in the summer.
In a perfect world, kid #1 would take the Subaru with her to work and she'll live happily with it hitting 200k miles when she trades it on a newer car after accepting her 2nd job or gets a promotion.
Kid #2 gets a repaired Accord when she needs a car in year 2 of college and keeps it running until she gets promoted or starts her 2nd job out of college.
Fingers crossed.
Edit November 2018:
A/C was fixed a few months ago with 2 new relays and the heater was fixed when I performed a reverse flush on the heater core.
Edit January 2019:
Kid #2 will be transferring to our local state college which takes the pressure off her needing a reliable winter car.
Change is the only constant.
